Match report Sri Lankan Cavaliers vs Friends United CC, Middlesex Premier Cricket League – MPCL CUP – 2nd Round played at Harlington Playing Fields on 16th June 2013

Scores: SLC 119/5 (29.3 overs) beat Friends United CC 118 (40.2 overs) all out by 5 wickets

It was a clash between Division 1 second team and Division 3 second team at Harlington Playing Fields in this intriguing 2nd round clash for MPCL Cup Knock Out. SLC captain Duminda won the toss and decided to bowl first under overcast condition with light rain in the air. Friends United captain Piyush Vanraj and Nirmal Ramgi opened the inning but captain Piyush (2 runs) lost his wicket when the score was on 7 to a superb catch in the cover. Ramesh Magan joined Nirmal in the middle as they soon started to score some quick runs with their excellent running between the wicket and in between Ramesh hitting some superb shots with one going for 6 straight over bowlers head. But soon Nirmal tried to hit one shot too many and lost his wicket. He scored 26 from 45 balls. Ramesh Magan soon after lost his wicket for 26 run as well. From there on rest of the batting line-up struggled to get any significant score as superior strength of bowling from opposition restricted them. Friends United eventually were bowled out for 118 in 41st over. Nuwan Jayasena and Wesley Fernando bowled brilliantly for the hosts.

In reply Friends United captain went on all-out attack as his strategy to start with two out and out fast bowler worked as Ramesh Magan took wicket in his first over and put host under pressure. Ramesh bowled unchanged from one end to produce superb spell of 2/22 in 9 overs with 2 maidens and Ramji Bagoane was superb from other end as he gave away only 11 runs in 6 overs. But 3 dropped catches in those opening 13 overs and further dropped catches allowed SLC’s batsmen to settle down and start scoring runs. Eventually they achieved their victory target in 30th over with loss of 5 wickets. Friends United came close to cause a major upset but poor catching and batting cost them the game.
